That day in September 2000 is still vivid in Garen's mind; arriving at the hospital to see his mother after she had undergone a battery of tests. He can still see that unforgettable look in her eyes when she told him that she had pancreatic cancer.

His mother had retired just 2 years earlier and was looking forward to going on that cruise she had always dreamed of. Now here they were, sitting on her hospital bed, not knowing if she would ever realize her dream. One of the toughest things to hear is that someone you love is going to die. There were no words to express how he felt.

She did not have critical illness coverage and the family was uncertain what expenses would be covered by the health system.  Would there be enough money? Thankfully his mother did have some savings to rely on but they weren't sure if the money would last throughout her illness.
Supporting her throughout the next year and a half was exhausting, physically, emotionally, and financially.  Garen was fortunate to have had great support from his mother's financial advisor, Les Machan Sr., President of Pension Planning Centre. The help and guidance he received inspired him to join the Insurance industry so that he could help others in a powerful way. He realized that there is more to life. It's not just what you leave behind, it's how you leave it that really matters.
